Special exhibition “Forget me not! Between purgatory and eternity”

April 4 to October 31, 2026

What remains of us when we leave this world? A search for traces from the nobility around the Zurich Oberland to us today.

The desire not to be forgotten has accompanied humanity since time immemorial. Even the nobility in the Middle Ages wanted to be remembered after death. With their belief in heaven, hell and purgatory and in eternal life, they donated entire buildings, altars, chalices and vestments for the salvation of their souls and as a visible sign of their good deeds.

The chapel in the Bubikon knight’s house and the former Rüti monastery, as places of burial, also offered the nobility a special privilege and reflected their rank and power.

The need to be remembered continues to this day. In a multi-generational project, three age groups, guided by artist Claudia Vogel, recorded what matters to them in life. They asked themselves the personal question: What traces should I leave behind after my death? Forget me not…

Interactive stations such as an AI confessional invite visitors to slip into the role of a noble and playfully negotiate their own salvation.

What passes away remains alive in memory.
