The Ritterhaus Bubikon is set to undergo a major redevelopment. Over the coming years, the museum, bistro and infrastructure will be extensively modernised to make this historic site even more attractive, accessible and versatile for current and future generations.

Greater accessibility for all

A key element of the project is improving accessibility. A lift will be installed in the south stairwell. This will ensure that, in future, people with walking difficulties or reduced mobility, families with pushchairs and other visitor groups will have easy access to the special exhibition, the hireable rooms and the majority of the permanent exhibition.

In addition, ramps and wayfinding systems will be installed throughout the building. The area surrounding the Ritterhaus will also be redesigned: the paths around the museum will be made barrier-free and fitted with new lighting. This will create a more comfortable and safer access route for all visitors.

Preserving and protecting the historic fabric

The planned construction measures are designed not only to enhance visitor comfort but also to ensure the long-term preservation of the historic building. A key component of the project is the new emergency staircase at the rear of the Ritterhaus, at the level of the historic toilet bay.

This solution enables compliance with current fire safety regulations without requiring major alterations to the historic interiors. Enhancing fire safety within the building would have resulted in significant changes to the historic fabric and the building’s unique atmosphere.

A new bistro and museum experience

In addition to the structural changes, the permanent exhibition is also being fundamentally redesigned. Spanning over 1,000 square metres and comprising a total of 18 rooms, a contemporary and interactive exhibition is being created that brings history to life in a variety of ways. Screens, projections, touchscreens, interactive stations and audio narrations will in future complement the traditional exhibits, creating new ways to engage with the history of the Ritterhaus and its inhabitants.

The bistro and shop facilities are also being reorganised. The current entrance area is too small and has caused damage to the historic building fabric due to a lack of air circulation. The bistro and shop will therefore be relocated to the ‘Trotte’, where there will be more space and additional sheltered seating. The bistro will also become fully accessible.

Tried-and-tested offerings such as special exhibitions, guided tours and cultural events will, of course, remain an important part of the programme. The Ritterhaus will continue to be a vibrant place for encounters, education and exchange.

A look to the future

With the planned investments, the Ritterhaus Bubikon is laying the foundations to continue bringing its history to life in the future. The modernisation combines a respectful approach to the historical heritage with the requirements of a contemporary museum and event venue.

In this way, the Ritterhaus remains a place where past, present and future come together in a special way – open, accessible and vibrant for all generations.
